will a lose connector on my 89 volkswagon golf gl fuel shutoff valve keep it from cranking

So you're saying the starter won't even turn the engine over when you turn the key on? The lose connection on the shutoff valve probably wouldn't do that, is there a reason you can't tighten that connection down.
I'd like to run some tests on the starter/charging system but you'll need a volt meter. You can pick one up at the autoparts store for under $30 if you don't have one. Let me know when you do have one so that we can do the necessary tests.
Did anything else weird happen to start this problem or you just went out to the car and tried to start it and it wouldn't?
