What could cause my check engine light to be on?

I have a 2002 Passat 1.8t, the check engine light is on. What could cause this and about how much is it going to cost me?

Is the check engine light on solidly or blinking? What were you doing when the light came on?

The check engine light is blinking. I was simply driving home, the engine started running rough, and the light started blinking. I drove the rest of the 5 miles home and parked it.
