what are the possible reasons for failed speedometer?

My speedometer meter on my 1996 ford explorer went dead a few days ago. Car has 180000 mls and it's a 6cl.

Sorry we just do VW and Audis but basically it's usually a bad speed sensor or speedometer itself. I'd start by checking out the speed sensor.
