the car won't start after the car is unlocked

The Automatic transmission was locked after the car was parked. The car Started when the handle moved slightly towards nutral and the key was turned in the ignition

What year abd model vw do you have and do your brake lights work?

it is a 98 and yes the brake lights work. the model is vw Golf

Is the gear indicator showing correctly in the guage cluster? I suspect a faulty range switch on the transmission.

Have you been able to repeat this? The most common problem with this year is a faulty ignition switch. Is it the same process to start the car each time?
